NVVR'S 5TH ANNUAL SAN MANUEL TO MERCEDES TRAIL RIDE
It's NVVR's 5th Annual Livestock Show Trail Ride! We will ride from San Manuel to Mercedes, taking back country roads and scenic routes along the way. This is the ride we wait for all year! Bring your tents, your RV's, or your horse trailers and get ready for an extended camping trip with plenty of riding, eating, dancing, and just plain fun. Now is the time to ask for those vacation days. You won't regret it!
On Monday, March 8, 2010, we will meet at the rest stop located at Highway 281 and FM 186 to camp overnight and prepare for the first day's ride. Dinner and sodas will be served. The ride will end on Saturday, March 13th, with a parade through downtown Mercedes, Tx. Fees for the 5-day ride are $20.00 per person per day, OR $40.00 per person for 5 days, OR $60.00 per family (2 adults and 2 children). Your entry fee will cover all of your meals and beverages. BYOB once the kitchen is closed for the night. We hope to see you on the trail with us. If you don't ride, no problem. We have a huge family wagon that follows along during the ride.
Can you help Scout? Contact Trail Boss, Ken Scott at 956-343-3583 or Chief Scout, Ricky Villa at 956-975-7503. Proof of negative Coggins required for your horse. Ride at your own risk. For more information, contact any Officer. Let's ride!
Here are a few details about the 5-day ride:
- Everyone is responsible for bringing their own horse, feed, tack, etc. The night stops will have water available. Most riders tie their horses to the horse trailer every night. Some of us bring stakes that we pound into the ground and tie the horses to the swivel portion. This way, the horses are allowed to lay down if they want. Others bring panels along and set up a small pen area.
- Monday's night stop will be at the rest stop at Hwy. 281 and FM 186, Tuesday night will be at Rio Beef (north of FM 186 on an un-named country road), Wednesday night will be at Delta Lake, Thursday night will be at Riderz Bar & Grill (one of our officers runs the place) in Elsa, and Friday night will be at a private home in Mercedes on Mile 2.
- Each person is responsible for their sleeping accommodations. Some people bring travel trailers, some motorhomes, some people sleep in their horse trailers or tents, some in their trucks. I guess you say there are different levels of "roughing-it". RV hook-ups are NOT available at any of the stops - we bring our generators instead.
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided by the club. Even so, a lot of us will eat the provided dinner but still choose to barbecue anyway. We love to bbq!
- Every morning, we get our horses ready, tie them up, and shuttle all vehicles and trailers to the next stop, and then we pile into the family wagon to get back to the horses. This way, when we arrive at the night stop, our equipment is there.
- During the ride, water, soft drinks, and beer are provided by the club. Once the "kitchen" is closed for the day, everyone is responsible for their own beverages. Yes, beer is provided by the club during the ride, and you are allowed to drink it while riding. Some clubs prohibit alcoholic beverages, but unfortunately, we have found it very difficult to do so. Since there are usually children present, we are very strict about how one behaves while consuming alcohol. We expect each individual to be responsible, and if they cannot, we ask them to leave. So far, we have not had a problem - I like to believe our club attracts the right kind of people.
- After the ride, some turn in early, some stay up late. We just kick back and relax and enjoy everyone's company. Wednesday night we have a live country band playing for us. Thursday night at Riderz we're hoping to get a DJ. Friday night we're trying to get another live band to play for us.
- Saturday is the day of the parade. We ride a few miles to the holding area, have lunch, then go through the parade at around 3pm and ride back to the Friday night stop. During the week, we usually have between 15-25 riders on any given day, but on Saturday 2 years ago we had 100 riders join us for the parade! Last year the parade was cancelled due to rain.
